How To Perfect The First Date

BEFORE THE DATE:

1. TAKE CONTROL

The nonchalance of what to do on the first date can be uncomfortable for both parties. Spare your date the agony by having a plan! A man who takes responsibility for arranging the night's events comes off as assertive and in charge. By having a plan, you can start the date off on an exciting note rather than sitting around debating what to do. This not only takes a bit of pressure of your date, it ensures that you won't be stuck doing something that makes you uncomfortable. It will give you the home court advantage and allow you to show off your skills, whether it be your dancing or knack for finding underground musicians.

2. CONSIDER HER INTERESTS

Though you have the control plan an evening to your liking, remember that it should be enjoyable for your date, too. Finding out her interests should not be rocket science. When in doubt, there is nothing wrong with asking her directly. Ask about her general interests to give you and idea of where to start.

3. KEEP IT A SURPRISE

Now that you know what she likes, research nearby events for a relevant, but lesser known event. If she is from the area, chances are she has already hit up the popular attractions. Once you decide on a destination, refrain from letting her know exactly what you are doing, or asking if she wants to go to the said destination. A first date is always more fun if there is an element of surprise. If you have tried to cater to her interests, she will most likely have no objections to wherever you choose. The mystery will also keep you on her mind up until the date night.

DURING THE DATE:

4. LET THE DATE PROGRESS ORGANICALLY

The reason you have planned the date is so you are not at a lost for things to do. However, if something better comes up or you both have a change of heart, be open to adjustments. Do what feels natural during the date because having a good time with your date is more important than following a tight schedule. Being overly persistent with your plans will make you seem high-strung or overbearing. Accept detours lightly and mishaps with a sense of humor.

5. ALWAYS PAY FOR HER. "ALWAYS".

Regardless of whether she insists on going Dutch or says she feels bad making you pay, you should always pay the tab. Considering that you were the one to plan the date, it will appear tacky not to see your plans through. Plus, you don't want to ruin a good first impression by appearing cheap. Reassure her that you are happy to treat her. If she still puts up a fight, tell her she can cover next time - that is, if you like her and want to hint at a next time.

6. BE IN THE MOMENT

This means two things: giving your date your full attention and thinking of the present rather than the future. The first means silencing your phone, making eye contact, and truly listening to her. Even a quick text message can unintentionally convey that you are bored with the date, so don't risk it. The latter means focusing on the date as it happens. Many people psych themselves out thinking about how the night is going to end. Do you give her a kiss? How does she feel about sex on the first date? These questions will be answered when the time comes. For now, just enjoy her company and the activity at hand. As you get to know her and the mood of the date, it will become clearer how the night will end. As a rule of thumb, follow her lead. If she is touchy or lingers at the end of the date, she is open to doing more. Be careful not to rush things, but have the instinct to take things further if it feels right.
