The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis
Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in myths. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don't consider them to be genuine scientific pursuits. Some of the common myths linked with hypnosis and the reality behind them are discussed here. Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. Psychology and the other sciences have a crucial role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very easy to imbibe and practice. The genuineness of hypnosis is doubted even by people who have watched it casting its spell on subjects. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not exhibiting enough mental strength to withstand the influence of their words. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can be exercised on anyone regardless of his or her levels of will power. That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized person is fully awake to what is going on around him. That individual is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily. Some scientists have concluded that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the researchers used the identical hypnosis procedure for everyone. People differ in their natures and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis techniques to fit the temperaments of different people. People also tend to equate hypnosis to meditation. However, meditation is essentially a personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, whereas communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not correct. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, whereas the very crux of the hypnosis method is communication. Another misconception is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in unnatural ways. But by mentally conditioning an individual to give up addictive habits like overeating and chain smoking, and by heightening one's inspiration levels, hypnosis can usher in significant physical alterations in a person and pave the way for a healthier body. Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and fulfilling life, and hence one must not pay heed to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an unbiased mind.
